AP-HP

The Department of Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine of Bicêtre University Hospital is the French Reference Centre of Pulmonary Hypertension. This centre leads the French Network of Pulmonary Hypertension and the National Registry of patients with pulmonary hypertension. In partnership with the INSERM unit UMR_S999, it is highly implicated in the development of novel therapies for pulmonary hypertension and conducts extensive experimental, translational and clinical research in this field. The centre is supported by national and international organisations (ERN-Lung, RespiFil, DHU THORINO, LabEx LERMIT).

INSERM U999

Pulmonary hypertension describes a group of devastating diseases, comprising idiopathic and associated forms, causing breathlessness, loss of exercise capacity and death due to elevated pulmonary artery pressure and subsequent right heart failure.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is defined by an elevation of the mean pulmonary artery pressure above 25mmHg at rest and/or 30mmHg during exercise without elevation of the pulmonary capillary wedge pressure. Extensive pulmonary artery remodeling with loss of vessel patency is the underlying pathomechanism.

The main scope of the Research Team "PULMONARY HYPERTENSION PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND INNOVATIVE THERAPIES" relates to pulmonary hypertension pathophysiology and clinical management. Deciphering of the mechanisms of lung vascular remodelling and identification of novel molecular targets to alleviate and ultimately cure pulmonary hypertension is the main objective of this proposal. On the basis of a nationwide web-based Registry, a biobank, and highly competitive scientists, our group will study a number of molecular pathways causing pulmonary vascular remodelling in human and animal models of pulmonary hypertension identify targets for therapy, foster drug development based on these targets and test novel treatments. Our main goal is to alleviate and cure pulmonary hypertension, a large burden to mankind, and to develop novel therapies.

INSERM U1176

Inserm U1176 -Hemostasis, Inflammation and Thrombosis- headed by Dr. Cécile Denis, aims to investigate the fundamental mechanisms driving the cross-talk between the hemostatic system and vascular cells. The ultimate goal is to optimize diagnosis and to develop alternative therapies in hemostasis and thrombosis.

The Unit is composed of two research groups:

  • the team of Dr. Cécile DENIS studies the pathophysiological role of coagulation proteins in- and beyond-hemostasis & the pathogenesis of such as

  • the team of Prof. Delphine BORGEL studies the in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases, including sepsis and ischemia/reperfusion injuries & the role of blood platelets and calcium in vascular permeability during thrombo-inflammatory diseases.

Sensome

Sensome developed a breakthrough technology that turns medical devices into connected healthcare devices. Founded in 2014, this spin-off from Ecole polytechnique has developed impedance-based micro-sensors that allow the identification of biological tissues in real time through AI algorithms. Integrated with medical devices, this information can provide physicians with critical insights when making treatment decisions. Sensome is currently developing a smart neurovascular guidewire that can determine the nature of the blood clot blocking a brain artery causing a stroke. Knowing the type of clot causing the stroke could speed-up the process of re-establishing blood flow to the patient's brain. Beyond stroke, Sensome's sensor technology can be deployed in other medical fields, such as interventional cardiology or oncology.

Xenios

XENIOS is dedicated to translating medical need into pioneering therapies and devices together with caregivers and patients.

novalung was formed back in 2003. In 2011, the Aachen-based medos AG was acquired by novalung with the aim of extending medos’ blood pump expertise and blood pump technology for use with lung therapies. Compared to other pumps, the pulsatile blood pump system offered by medos was ideal for this kind of use. This also enabled the company to expand its overall product spectrum to offer both lung and heart support. This makes sense anatomically, since coronary and pulmonary circulation are interrelated. Logically, therefore, products are based on a single technology and use the same platform. The first joint project that resulted is i-cor: syncronized cardiac assist for treatment of cardiogenic shock and circulatory support during cath lab interventions.

In 2013, an initial step was then taken towards a full merger of these two businesses with the formation of a parent holding company, XENIOS.
